What makes Elon Musk so Successful in Everything
This Self-made billionaire’s electrifying character made him fiercely famous.
Billionaire entrepreneur, achieved astounding success in every venture he ever tried. Elon Musk is the real world’s Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man), fifth-richest person in the world(Forbes August 31, 2020), who’s official annual salary for Tesla is just $1. He was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa, then moved to Canada when he was 17. Eventually, he came to America and became a citizen in 2002 at the age of 31.
There are 2,604 billionaires in the world and 55.8% of them are self-made.(source Wealth-X). The word “Self-made Billionaires” is not only a symbol of prestige for the person who achieved it but also an inspiration for the rest of us. It gives the massage that where we are born can never be the scale to measure what we can achieve.
“I think it is possible for ordinary people to choose to be extraordinary.” -Elon Musk
Sometimes we are so mesmerized by their accomplishments, we forget to look at what goes under the hood. There are so many to mention What is so special about Elon Musk? What made him big? But I choose to list 10 of my favorite.
10 Reasons what made Elon Musk so Successful.
- Elon Musk’s education relied heavily on self-teaching. From teaching himself computer programming to creating a video game called Blastar at the age of 12, to becoming the chief engineer/designer at SpaceX Musk relied mostly on self-learning by reading books.
- He believes no matter how smart a person is he can’t change the world single-handedly. So hires the best in each field, usually the top 1% of each sector.
- He pursued his goal against staggering odds. For example both his flagship companies (SpaceX and Tesla Motors) came extremely close to failing. Tesla’s first electric car ‘The Roadster’ faced an ongoing string of production problems, and SpaceX had three lunch failures before they managed to convince their investors to put their money for one last attempt, which was a success.
“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” -Elon Musk
- He is really smart with a Photographic Memory. Which came in very handy on his journey.
- He has an extraordinary ability of problem-solving and tenacity, despite failures.
- He works like a mad man. At least 100 hour weeks. He himself mentioned this several occasions, he spent weeks without leaving the factory. Some weeks he worked 120 hours or more, sleeping on his factory’s floor. He works until he finishes what he started.
- Attention to detail is remarkable as always. Perhaps Model X interior could be a good example for this. This Car’s ultra white seats can hold up after 25,000 miles of driving with little sign of wear and tear. To give its interior a full exotic high-quality design his company goes through a pain taking process which caused the car to delay nearly a year and a half.
- Thinking outside the Box. It’s not the abundance of resources but the mindset that makes the difference.
- He is obsessed with customer satisfaction and product quality. Elon Musk took a customer tweet about a complaint on Supercharger and made a change in policy company-wide in less than six days. They developed a new app with an alert feature to avoid this problem again. Musk listened to his customers and made immediate change. Providing this better customer experience, proven to be a key to Elon Musk’s success.
- His early business success not only gave him the money and resources but also courage and self belief, which later displayed great value for him in achieving success.
“We’re going to make it happen. As God is my bloody witness, I’m hell-bent on making it work.” -Elon Musk
I still remember that talk show where in response to the question “what was his biggest failure”, he said after SpaceX, first 3 launches failed, they barely managed to put together parts and money needed for the fourth and final launch, and he tried very hard to get the right expertise for SpaceX but good chief engineers wouldn’t join and there is no point in hiring bad ones, so he became the chief engineer.
My words are not strong enough to express how much these few words have moved me. When he had almost nothing left, he had the courage to continue. I’m regretting every second while I’m writing this because I’m very good at showing why I didn’t try and finding excuses for all my failures. But the truth is my own two hand is solely responsible for all that I gained and what I didn’t.
If I have to tell what inspired me the most I’ll choose these two, If I have a strong will, I can learn anything and If I have the audacity to continue, I can achieve success in anything.
It’s true there are controversies, ill-considered public remarks and alarming error in early business execution, it is clear that slowly but surely he is becoming one of the greatest entrepreneurs not only in our time but to be precise, any time in human history.
