Real Talk: GAF*ck Recap

On Tuesday night, we got vulnerable for our REAL TALK: The Subtle Art of Giving the Right Amount of F*cks with Sarah Watson. We skipped straight to the good stuff with an open & intentional Q&A with the BBH CSO to talk mentorship, growth, and finding our voice as we step into our power.
Sarah shared her personal story from fashion to strategy, the turning points in her career as she chose to leap the pond, what she learned from her choices, and laid bare the lessons learned later in life and all the more valuable regardless of what career stage you’re in. the collective wisdom was hella abundant and the community was not shy with questions or with ideas for how to navigate the subtle art of trusting ourselves, our guts, and our voices. Trusting our gut takes time but listening to ourselves and then watching others do the same is powerful.
Below is the gist of what we learned with Best Bites, ways to Go Deeper, and how to Run With It.

Best Bites
- On mental health in the workplace. “Being seen and heard and letting people tell their stories, is a way we can kind of institutionalize therapy.”
- On mentorship & feedback. “The role of feedback is you want people who see you, and not everyone is good at seeing you. A mentor is a person that can call you out in a way you can hear.
- On bending so as not to break. “Resilience is one of the major skills of today that people look for. Being able to deal with change.”

Go Deeper
- Grab a copy of Let Your Life Speak by Parker Palmer. He talks about how you have to get your egos out of the way while being honest about our desires. More of this, please.
- Get inspired by Reboot: Leadership and the Art of Growing Up by Jerry Colonna. He does Reboot podcast and his story of breaking down to the point of being suicidal led him to a years-long healing process that made him more empathetic. Necessary.
- Need more inspirational audio experiences? Listen to Ram Dass Here and Now, Scott Galloway, and Sarah’s favorite podcast ever: On Being. “On Apple Podcasts, Sticher, or wherever you get your pods.”

Run With It
- Feeling frustrated by work or personal stuff? On a sheet of paper, draw a line down the middle. At the top of the left side write “Things I can Control” and on the right, “Things the Universe Controls.” Now free write. Making the distinction brings clarity to the places we can commit ourselves without frustrating ourselves.
- If you find yourself in toxic work environments or working for a boss that’s hurting more than helping, ask yourself, “What am I doing here? Am I learning? Why am I here?” and let those answers guide you.
