Doug, Degree: Computer Science

Q: What made you come to HackRU?

Q: What was one of the biggest takeaways you had from HackRU?

A: One of the biggest takeaways from HackRU was the closing ceremonies. Reflecting on what I had learned and the people I had met had me coming back to future HackRUs.

Q: Tell us about an experience you had at HackRU.

A: I remember it being about 5 am, the hype for that night was starting to die, and majority of people were starting sleep; all but one team that is. While the venue was basically close to silent, this one team had just started to get their project to work and their excitement was so genuine. I still remember, that hack was a home-run derby VR app that let you interact with the game through a wiffle ball bat. What made this moment so memorable was seeing how other teams were so interested, and how people in passing by were so willing to try their app. This moment really resonated with me simply because it conveyed the camaraderie that hackathons are capable of creating.

Q: What would you tell someone participating at their first hackathon?

A: Don’t think that you are out of place if you are new to coding, don’t feel like you’re obligated to try and win a prize, and especially don’t think that people are unwilling to help. People come to hackathons to meet new people and learn. Focus on learning something new and simply try to just build something — no matter the size of your project!

Q: How is technology going to shape your career?

A: As a CS major, technology shapes my career everyday. From coding for work, to giving talks, a day doesn’t go by where I’m not thinking about software.

Q: What’s your name and major?

A: My name is Rajvi Mehta and my major is Computer Science.

Q: What was one of the biggest takeaways you had from HackRU?

A: From HackRU, I learned that computer science is a vast field and there is so much to learn, but there is also many resources to learn from. I realized that to learn something on your own outside of school, you have to start somewhere and HackRU gave me the perfect opportunity to start learning something new.

Q: Tell us about an experience you had at HackRU.

A: An experience I had was building an iPhone app and using all the great resources present at HackRU like the student mentors and also the company mentors as well!

Q: What would you tell someone participating at their first hackathon?

A: I would tell them to not give up on their project and to be open minded to new ideas.

Q: How is technology going to shape your career?

A: Technology will always inspire me to find the more efficient solution and challenge me to create creative projects in my career.
