Will HackRU Fall 2018 be your first hackathon? If so, welcome! We (the HackRU organizing team) are looking forward to seeing you in October!
If you’ve never before attended a hackathon, here are some things you should know and do:
First things first, what is a hackathon? A hackathon is an event where people come together to work on projects. That’s a really simple definition since each hackathon is different! Let’s look at HackRU.
HackRU is a 24-hour hackathon held at Rutgers University — New Brunswick. Participants usually work together in small teams (up to 4) on a software or hardware project.
You can learn new skills from an experienced speaker during our tech talks. There are mentors who can assist you with a programming language, or a piece of hardware, or anything you may want to learn about. You can chat with representatives from our sponsors and learn about their companies.
One of the awesome things about HackRU is that it is free! There’s free food, snacks, drinks, and fun swag (I, for one, love collecting the stickers).
All you need to bring is essentials for an overnight stay (like toiletries) and a photo ID (with proof of age — you have to be 18 to attend, unless you’re a Rutgers student). You should also bring a laptop and any tech essentials (chargers, mouse, headphones, etc.)
HackRU is not just for computer science majors! We welcome anyone and everyone to join us for a fun event full of learning and creativity. If you’ve never written a line of code, that is totally okay! You can pick up some skills at our tech talks, or from talking to other participants or our mentors. Chat with people to see what projects they’re working on, or find a group of people and brainstorm ideas. HackRU is a great place to learn new skills and be creative!
HackRU Fall 2018 is October 6–7 at College Avenue Student Center at Rutgers University — New Brunswick.
