Still reeling from the announcement that The Woods was actually a new Blair Witch film, audiences were stunned to discover a basketball-playing golden retriever at the center of the nail-biting, adrenaline-inducing, edge-of-your-seat deathgrip of sheer terror.

17 years after the found footage horror film, The Blair Witch Project, shocked moviegoers, the 2016 sequel delivers not only on blood-curdling scares but on answering cryptic questions posed by the original’s chilling conclusion. Was there actually a witch in those woods? What really happened to Heather, Josh, and Mike? SPOILER ALERT: It was Air Bud all along.

However, this surprise may be less dramatic to those who have diligently followed Blair Witch writer, Simon Barrett, on Twitter. He subtly dropped hints regarding his research into the Air Bud filmography.

From the film’s first shaky shot of the canine’s blonde-turned-bloody maw, it is clear that the filmmakers respect their source materials. Any concerns about Blair Witch dismissing the Air Bud canon can be put to rest. Buddy’s sports skills are effortlessly translated to crafting stick figures, erecting stone piles, and savagely brutalizing young adults beyond recognition.

For those keeping track, there are 15 films in the Air Bud franchise: five in the core Air Bud series, seven in the Air Buddies series, two Christmas specials, and finally a Blair Witch/Air Bud mashup. If history repeats itself, fans will be treated to countless VOD sequels in the new Horror Bud line.
