A warrant will likely be issued for a suspect who stole a car in Haddonfield yesterday, borough Police Chief John Banning said Wednesday afternoon. The suspect’s identity is known, Banning said, but he was able to evade arrest yesterday around 4 p.m. after Cherry Hill detectives approached the suspect and he fled in the neighborhood of Hopkins Avenue.

The suspect allegedly stole a vehicle in Haddonfield around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Banning said. Detectives from the Cherry Hill Police Department observed the vehicle near Hopkins Avenue and Grove Street around 4 p.m. The suspect fled when he noticed the detectives on the scene. A K9 unit was brought into the scene to try to track the suspect.

Banning said reports of the suspect being armed were untrue. No Haddonfield officer ever observed the suspect with a weapon, he said.

A resident of Rhoads Avenue reported that a Haddonfield police officer told her to remain indoors because a potentially armed suspect was in the neighborhood.
