This haiku brushes up against three of my favorite reoccurring themes — the sound of the house, ritual… and coffee.
The sound of an electric grinder grinding coffee has been part of our mornings for well-over a decade now — we’re now on the third one since my wife and have been married. Our current one sits constantly at the ready prepared to dispense the proper amount of coffee every morning with the touch of a single button. Our Technivorm Moccamaster is the quietest at-home coffee maker I’ve ever heard, but it still burbles just enough to let you know it’s working. Then comes the moment we’re waiting for… the sounds of the first drops of coffee hitting the bottom of the carafe. Day after day, week after week, year after year, the same sounds — sounds that make a house our home.
