mindlessly flipping switches

to turn the lights on

Life teems with habits and routines that get us through our day, but how often do we pay attention to them?

A storm with a ton of rain blew through our neck of the woods last night knocking out the power for over two hours. As I made my way from room to room to get settled for the evening, I reached up and flipped the light switch… and nothing happened. My thinking brain expected nothing different, but it wasn’t my thinking brain that was in charge at that particular moment, was it?

If nothing else, this haiku forces me to realize just how many habits and routines drive my everyday life and don’t always result in the desired outcomes.
