the garbage trucks race against

the oncoming heat

The work rules for the rear load drivers (this is the actual job title, I looked it up) for our local waste removal company read like this — you can start your route anytime after 2:00 a.m. and you will get paid the same no matter how long it takes to run your route. The weather folks promise that the temps will reach the nineties today with megaoodles of humidity. With a forecast like that, you can bet I would be rolling out the gate promptly at 2:00 and hustling my buns if I were in their shoes. They obviously feel the same way — the truck, which usually shows up about 6:00, made our stop before 5:00 this morning. I sincerely hope they have their route completed and can relax with a beverage of their choice well before noon.
