the prevailing winds

memorialized in the

tops of dried corn stalks

— —

While I live in the ‘bumpy part’ of Ohio, a fifteen-minute drive north puts me in the flatlands full of straight roads and farms. I found myself in that part of the world twice in the last week and made an interesting discovery — the tops of the dried corn stalks were almost uniformly bent towards the east. As the winds in this part of the world generally comes from the west, it makes all the sense in the world.

On a deeper level, this haiku sprang from the realization that I still have things to discover in this world close to home, let alone far afield. I’m not being the least bit hyperbolic when I say this gives me all kinds of reason to not only live, but live fully.
