She had been thinking of getting a fringe for a very long time, or so she told me. One afternoon, she tied bits of her hair up with pins in order to ‘mimic’ a fringe and sent me a picture. I remember thinking how terrific it looked and telling her how well it would suit her. A few days later, she had booked an appointment at this fancy hairdressers opposite our university in London. I sat with her in the salon and glanced at the work in progress while working on my computer. She was concerned that some amongst her entourage wouldn’t like the change. Little did I expect the « fringe » would become such an important subject of concern and conversation over the weeks following the appointment. This experience made me realise how much I underestimated how a haircut can change the way we see and think about ourselves. In other words, do not underestimate the power of the fringe. It did push her into wearing a bomber jacket, ya know, like street-style yo. And, well, that was unexpected.

One afternoon, she tied bits of her hair up with pins in order to ‘mimic’ a fringe and sent me a picture.

Before and After: spot the difference?

The Hair Stories used to be an ode to inspirational women whom I talked to about their hair. The Hair Stories have now transformed into a weekly blogpost where I talk about the history and politics of hair.
