Refusing to Buy Size Large

“A Size 8 hip at Banana Republic equals a Size 2 hip at Gap.” The New York Times investigates the shitshow that is the ever-expanding “standard” women’s clothing size and finds that it remains a shitshow, but now there is an infographic. One proposed band-aid to this “vanity sizing” crisis is a full-body scan that takes your measurements and tells you your size at different stores — a 4 in American Eagle jeans, a 0 in Ann Taylor dresses, etc. I’d make a Wall-E joke here about how hard it is to get dressed if I didn’t so vividly remember standing in a J.Crew dressing room, overcome with happiness that I’d somehow become a size smaller. It lasted for about 10 minutes until I figured out that the sizes had all been reduced, and even then I still felt happy.
