I recently heard of an old Dutch nautical saying: “Wooden ships and iron men.” Today, a man being characterized as being made of iron is rarely heard of, if at all. Today’s man tends to favor a more plush, even, soft lifestyle. Can a man be as tough as iron these days?

Have you ever heard someone say “he’s a man’s man”? A man’s man is a man who is looked up to by other men. A man’s man is someone who can be followed.

King David was a tough-as-iron man’s man. Real men followed him. David was a real man who understood his place in the world and was busy doing what God made him to do. God set David apart and taught him how to lead. David was a lion and bear killer of a man. He was a real man!

At some point, real men must get busy being what God made them to be.

hard working, God fearing, faithful men who love their wives and children and who live every day to bring glory to the Lord Jesus. Men who chase lions and serve God with passion.

If that’s what God had called us to be and to do, then how do we get there from here?

First, we need to recognize that becoming God’s man in Christ will not come apart from the steady intake of the Word of God. Through His Word, we must surrender to Him. The Bible says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17. A daily intake of the Bible will, over time, shape you into the man God has called you to be. Growing in our relation with Jesus is so important!

Second, a real man will engage in the culture around him. He will not get stuck on the couch while his family lives around him. By example, he’ll get up and lead his family to the presence of God. There’s nothing better than a Godly man leading his wife and children into a closer walk with Jesus!

Finally, the man who brings glory to Jesus understands that he can’t do life without God so he talks to him often. In fact, a real man prays and leads his family to pray by his example.

Simple, right? You wish! It’s hard being the man God made you to be. The enemy wants to destroy you. And he’ll make it hard for you, but don’t be afraid. God is more than able to give you strength in your time of weakness, if you’ll trust in Him.

It’s time to reclaim manhood for God’s glory and I believe this is where it starts

Before you go…

Read the verse below and think about what it would look like for you to replace fear & timidity with power, love, 7 self-discipline. Also, make some time to listen to our latest episode. You’ll be glad you did.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” // 2 Timothy 1:7
