This Week in Wizard Activism: 7 Days Until Camp GLA!
By V Rosales
Happy Friday, everyone! We hope everyone is having a good week and getting ready for Camp GLA. We’ve got quite a bit to cover, including a CAMP GLA update! So let’s kick off This Week in Wizard Activism by a quote from Hayao Miyazaki, “Always believe in yourself. Do this and no matter where you are, you will have nothing to fear.”
Camp GLA Approaches!
Are you ready to get cozy around the virtual campfire next week? We are! We’ve even released the preliminary schedule for Camp, if you’d like to start planning. And, we’ve already got a very exciting update! For our “New Decade of Fan Activism” panel, a discussion on what a new decade of fan activism looks like in practice, we have two exciting new panelists. Joining us will be Porshèa Patterson-Hurst the Director of Strategic Partnerships for Black Girls Create and Shawn Taylor from The Nerds of Color and the Black and Brown Comix Arts Festival. Along with these two amazing folks, we’ll also have Henry Jenkins (professor, author, and podcast host), Sangita Shresthova (Director, Civic Paths Group USC), Jackson Bird (TED speaker, author, and Youtube creator), and Katie Bowers (Managing Director, The Harry Potter Alliance).
In the Wider Wizarding World
If you haven’t already heard the news, MuggleNet and The Leaky Cauldron have released commitments to keeping an inclusive and welcoming community, despite the author’s recent statements. In an excerpt from MuggleNet, they state, “We are committed to doing better work in our community to uplift and center the people who have been marginalized and create positive change from within our fandom platforms…MuggleNet’s one and only concern is to create a safe community where all feel welcome.” To read the full statement, please go here for MuggleNet and here for The Leaky Cauldron.
