I recently wrote about the great NBC TV lineup of the 80s. Well, CBS had a great Saturday night comedy lineup in the 70s. One of the components of that great lineup was “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” It introduced us to the crew of TV station, WJM as well as some other interesting characters. Here are some things you might not have known about the show.

1: Originally, Mary Richards was going to be a divorcee.

It seemed that people were having a hard time distinguishing the Mary Richards character from Mary Tyler Moore’s other famous character, Laura Petrie. Audiences were actually mad at Mary for leaving that likeable guy, Dick Van Dyke.

It seems like TV audiences have been dumb for a very long time.

2: Ted Knight nearly quit the show because people confused him with his Ted Baxter character.

Being thought of as a dummy really wore on Ted. Ironically, viewers would think Ted Baxter was a genius if he was on Fox News today.
