During the 70s Happy Days and Lavern and Shirley made a formidable block of comedy via Gary Marshall. While things generally went smoothly on the set of Happy Days, that wasn’t the case over at Lavern and Shirley set. Of course, Ron Howard, of Happy Days has gone on to have a great career as a movie director, but Penny Marshall, aka Lavern, did pretty well in that regard herself.

Generally speaking, the characters on Lavern and Shirley were a little more blue collar than the folks on Happy Days. With that in mind, here are some things you might not have known about Lavern and Shirley.

1: Laverne and Shirley got their start on Happy Days.

They played some girls on from the wrong side of the tracks who went on a double date with Richie Cunningham and Fonzie. I didn’t know Milwaukee had a wrong side of the tracks backs in the 50s.

2: The characters of Lenny and Squiggy were created by L&S writers Michael McKean and David Lander when they were in college.

I would not have taken Lenny and Squiggy for college guys.
