Florence Flatbottom, affectionately known as Flory by his two-legged friends, had a problem. Flory’s problem was not his lopsided ear, which, no matter how much he tried, would simply not stand up straight. Nor was his problem to be found in his unusually short legs, short even for a Corgi. His problem was not even his ridiculously pretentious and ill-suited name — that truly was an embarrassment to the nobility of Corgis everywhere.

No, Flory’s problem was far worse than the average person would even be able to contemplate. That is if the average person were prone to contemplate the potential problems of Corgis.

Flory huffed and dropped his head on his paws and resigned himself to the singularity of his woe. Unrequited love. He stared dolefully across the courtyard at the object of his affection. She was so beautiful — Long neck, striking complexion, and the most amazing orange beak.

But, alas, she would never be his, and every time he had crossed the yard to get to know her, she had honked at him and spread her wings. He sported several welts for his effort.

Flory sighed and rolled onto his back. When would he learn? He should just accept that his heart was on the rebound. And, honestly, how could anyone follow on the beauty of Harold Hightops’ perfectly pink snout and her lovely curly-cue of a tail? His mother had warned him that wishing for the impossible was a bad habit! When would he learn?
