Common Sayings About Cats
And what my cat has to say about them
For as long as people have lived around cats (estimated between 10,000 to 12,000 years), there have been sayings, proverbs, epigrams, etc. about cats. Many of these common sayings have not been very complimentary.
As can be imagined, most cats hold a simmering resentment about some of these less-than-flattering, age-old sayings about them. To get a clearer notion of what cats actually think about this topic, I asked my cat Bruce for his input.
Why ask my cat Bruce? Of all the cats I have had the pleasure to live with, Bruce seems to be the most consistent bibliophile. More than any other cat I have known, Bruce can most often be found sitting or sleeping on my books, wherever I happen to lay them down; be it on my desk, my bedside table, my kitchen counter, or stacked precariously on the floor.
What follows, in bold type, are some of the common sayings about cats that have been popular for years, centuries, and possibly longer.
In italics are Bruce’s comments and criticisms of these popular sayings. True, Bruce does tend to take these often-innocuous proverbs seriously, but as with most cats, he has a high sense of his own personal honor, importance, and unflagging self-esteem.
