Fatal Attraction

reflections on a quiet tragedy

A heartbreaking sight greeted me as I opened the folding lid of my toolbox. The tiny red magnet, purchased years ago, used once for some obscure purpose, to never again see active duty, had quietly buckled and collapsed onto itself.

When, at what split second in its long, dull existence did that momentous and irreversible life event take place? Did it hold on heroically, for days, months, years, against the forces of nature, resisting the inevitable?

Arms of opposite poles, kept apart so long, now locked in a forever embrace.

Did it go willingly?

In a rapture of acceptance, with stoic calm, surrendering to the laws of the universe that gave meaning to its being?

With anticipation, or hope, that it will evoke new associations, new emotions in those gazing upon its contorted carcass?

… of awareness?

… of struggle?

… of love?
