Yesterday I had a doc appointment. I always hate those. But usually, as a treat to myself for camping out in a waiting room for two hours and hoping I don’t pick up someone’s cooties there, I’ll drop by the local donut shop and buy a few bear claws pastries or double-chocolate glazed ‘nuts.

As the lady boxed up my choices I noticed the sticker ad on the box below.

Oh my! This Friday, June 7th, is National Donut Day.

Is there really such a thing?

Indeed there is. You must thank the Salvation Army for creating this special tribute.

During World War I, 250 Salvation Army volunteers joined the front lines to support the American Expeditionary Force in France.

These were women whose mission was to provide spiritual and emotional comfort to the men by leading religious services — with music played on Victrolas — and issuing treats like hot cocoa and fudge.
