It was six o’clock on a steamy August morning at the Sunrise Recovery Center in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.
Attendees began, filing in coffee cups in hand for the daily 6:15 meeting.
After a brief call to order by Josh Randall the center’s morning group leader, and the awarding of several “tokens” commemorating significant sobriety anniversaries, Sean was called on to introduce himself.
“Hi, I’m Sean and you better believe I’m an alcoholic,” he said and rubbed the bandage above his blackened left eye.
“Hi Sean,” the ten other attendees and Josh said back as cheerfully as the early hour and their as yet under caffeinated conditions would permit.
“And what brings you here today, Sean?” Josh asked.
Sean took a big sip through the straw of his extra large iced coffee, rubbed his bandage again began.
“Well it all started about a year ago when I got laid off from my job as building manager over at Stuyvesant Plaza. The owners sold the place to a national corporate management company who brought in their own people and I got “retrenched” as they say these…
