You know it—the creeping dread. Sure, there are other worries.

Did I turn the oven off? Is the garage door open?

But when your friend unburdens herself on Facebook (she lost her job the same day she fractured her hip and her husband left her) and you want to wrap her in a warm virtual hug, there looms the very worst fear of all.

Did I accidentally click on the laughing emoji?

They are right next to each other. They are both yellow. And you were in a hurry. Please, oh please, no.

Hopefully, you are close to your phone when the wave of nausea hits you and you can check to make sure you are safe. Thank you, Baby Zeus.

Today you will not be the reason someone looks more closely at the online reactions to figure out who the scumbag is who mocked someone’s misfortune. Today you are safe. But what about tomorrow?
