Lilly was nineteen and lived on her grandfather Jos’s horse farm in the small town of Baak, in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. She had lived on the farm since she was five when her parents were killed in an avalanche while skiing in Switzerland.
Having grown up around horses, Lilly preferred their company to that of most people, including her grandfather who never quite warmed up to the idea of her intruding on his life and 186 acres.
As a result, Lilly kept mostly to herself and her horses and in time grew to be an excellent equestrian who could tame and train a horse from its first saddle to medal winning show jumping.
In the evenings, Lilly would take a cold shower and eat a silent dinner at her grandfather’s old wooden dining table, prepared by his longtime cook and housekeeper Sophie, who spoke little and ate separately. Lilly would then go to her sparsely furnished room, brush her hair 100 times on each side and tuck herself into bed with one of the books on the shelf above her bed.
Lilly loved to read and her favorite authors were the Marquis De Sade, Leopold von Sacher-Masochand and Anne Rice. Had Jos known, her conservative grandfather would not have approved of the…
