Metamorphosis

In the Metamorphosis Kafka talks about the ramifications of the process by which Gregor Samsa is turned into a giant insect. What is essential to note is the nonchalance with which Kafka writes about the change. His very first line is:

“When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.”

There it is no beating about the bush.

I’ve often thought about the calm impatience with which we ignore the existential ramifications of metamorphosis or change. Imagine if you were a caterpillar and one day after a long sleep found yourself in a different body altogether without any form of prior warning or consent, would you really calmly walk out, spread your wings and fly?

The irony of this, in an absurd world, is that it happens more often than we think and rather repeatedly.

Here’s an amazing article about existentialism in Kafka’s metamorphosis:

At some level I feel for Fred the poor guy had just perfected the art of wriggling about and now he has to start all over again, nobody asked him if he wanted this, even though we know and believe that change is for the better.

See you guys on Friday for a special Diwali edition.
