Political Diss Course
One thing we learnt from the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009, a political scandal concerning expenses claims made by members of the British Parliament, is that the UK public do not like politicians wasting taxpayer’s money.
I recall at the time hitting the streets to canvass public opinion. To say people were not happy would be to put it mildly. Those I spoke with were comfortable giving their names, however I opted to assign them appropriate descriptors. ‘Angry White Man’ said, “It’s a disgrace!” whereas ‘Angry Young White Woman’ offered, “I fink it’s disgusting!” ‘Angry Person Of Colour’ declared, “They should all be ashamed!” whilst ‘Voiceless’ added, “Who do they think they are!?!”
Fast forward to now, and one thing we have learnt from the Starmer ‘freebies’ scandal of 2024, a political scandal concerning the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom receiving handouts, is that the UK public do not like politicians receiving gifts, benefits, and hospitality.
Once again, to put it mildly, people are not happy. As they were criticising politicians, those I spoke with were keen for me to quote their names, however I judged it fitting to assign them appropriate descriptors. ‘Angry White Man’ said, “I think it’s disgusting!” whereas ‘Angry Young White Woman’ offered, “It’s a disgrace!” ‘Angry Person Of Colour’ declared, “Who does he think he is!?!” whilst ‘Voiceless’ added, “He should be ashamed!” Many of the opinions expressed seemed to echo yesteryear, however one person did have an original take. ‘The Silent Majority’ said, “Politicians should use their own money. Us taxpayers pay them enough!”
