It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost nine years since Ted Cruz’s Canadian citizenship was officially cancelled on May 14, 2014. When it was revealed by the Dallas Morning News the previous year that Cruz had dual citizenship, the senator immediately signaled his intention to renounce his Canadian citizenship.

“Say it ain’t so, Ted” was the cry that echoed from coast to coast to coast throughout Canada in the wake of his announcement in 2013. Admittedly, before the revelation by the Dallas broadsheet, we here in Canada didn’t even know the Texas Republican was one of us but once we found out, we were kind of bummed that he wanted nothing to do with us.

Was it so shameful to be Canadian, Mr. Cruz? Could you not have come out of the citizenship closet and proudly admitted that you were bi-national? After all, some people are just born Canadian and that’s OK.

We heard at the time that you formally asked the Canadian government to erase, expunge, and forever eradicate your status as one of us. According to some, the process was fairly straightforward and only required you to satisfy a few simple…
