Should I Marry Myself?
Or wait and see what the dog thinks?
“A dog is the only thing in this world that loves you more than you love yourself.” Josh Billings
I am a champion dog-sitter. Show me any breed and I’ll usually make friends with them—even if I’m off the clock, which happens. I’ve had the occasional dog that wasn’t crazy about me. I told them, “I’m not crazy about you, either.” Dogs don’t understand tit for tat.
Being human, I understand it completely.
Having dogs that like you is a great ego boost. They’re generally great judges of character. Sometimes, though, I find myself asking, Does this make me a good person? I’m not saying I feel like a bad one. Or a misunderstood one. I just keep wondering, “Can I really trust a dog?”
But I feel like I’m relying too much on dogs. Is that wrong?
The answer is, according to Dale Carnegie who wrote “How To Win Friends and Influence People,” you can’t. You have to trust yourself. How you do that is being honest. Do you feel like a good person? Is there anything to suggest you aren’t?
I’m down a rabbit hole on this one, only because I’m not sure I’m totally honest with myself. Not that I can’t be. But I feel like I’m relying too much on dogs.
