TOM SAWYER SAT ACROSS THE STREET watching his friend Ben whitewash Aunt Polly’s fence and petting his new frog. What a sweet gig, conning friends into doing his job and ponying up swag to do it. Oops, there was Aunt Polly again. She’d spotted the ringer, and boy was she pissed.

He ducked into the alley and watched while she took the brush from Ben and pointed her finger for him to leave. Sure enough, she shaded her brow with her hand and searched for her errant nephew.

“Scared of a skirt?”

What a sweet gig for Tom, conning friends into doing his job and ponying up swag to do it.

Tom pivoted to see who was speaking. Then he looked down. Then looked further down. The voice came from a toddler holding a gold baby bottle and wearing bulging diapers. Dripping too, which was gross.

“That’s your problem. You think too small.”

Tom held forth his prize frog. “But check this out. It’s a cool frog.” He searched through his pockets. “A jew’s harp, a piece of blue bottle, an apple, tin soldier, six firecrackers, and, best…
