Many a moons ago, everyone in my family thought it was a real treat when we had this versatile meat for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Especially my brother and I.

Spam

A processed canned pork and ham made by Hormel Foods introduced in 1937. It became popular after World War II and was sold in 41 countries world wide. The first 12 ounce cans were sold for 25 cents. Over the years the price has been as high as $6.00 for the same size can.

Miguel Garcia owner of Foodtown, Keyfood and Met Foodmarket brands told the New York Post in an interview he’s started to showcase Spam (along with some other canned meats) because it’s in such demand recently.

So brisk is the demand Garcia reported,”I’m selling them (cans of Spam) at a discount ($4.99) now because I’m buying more.

Although Spam is leaving the shelves at a rapid pace, the average tab at Garcia’s markets has fallen from $20.00 a trip to a modest $15.00.
