I want to bring you up to date on my progress with your project to raise the U.S. profile for the French Canadian holiday St. John the Baptist Day. While I agree that it is possible it could become as popular in the United States as St. Patrick’s Day, there won’t be any St. John the Baptist Day Parades this year. And probably not next year, either. Or, for that matter, in our lifetimes.

Not Much To Work With: St. Patrick has a gripping story involving being kidnapped and imprisoned in Ireland as a young man, escaping, and then spending forty years traveling around like Stanley Tucci. The guy practically sells himself.

All St. John the Baptist did was baptize Christ, and then he was beheaded. Martyrdom may make you popular politically for a while, but otherwise? Think if Santa came to an end like John the Baptist’s. Christmas would be gone. Poof.

Rebranding Possibility: St. John the Baptist needs to be a lot less depressing. He’s supposed to have lived in the desert with wild beasts for forty…
