I really like satellite radio. I seldom listen to local radio anymore. I find DJs don’t matter much as they used to. Actually, radio personalities, in general, don’t much matter. When I listen to the radio now, I want music, sports, weather or news. If by chance, I want to listen to comedy, I’ll listen to a comedy station. On some satellite music stations, a few of the DJs will talk between songs. I don’t care for that. Generally speaking, I want them to shut up and play the music. That’s a departure from the days when people would talk about DJs.

I also used to pay more attention to radio station call letters. I actually did a little writing for radio stations so I their call letters could come into play. Perhaps the most famous call letters for a radio station are, WKRP, in Cinncinatti. You might even remember the WKRP mascot, the carp. Call letters gave radio stations a sense of identity. Consider a few examples.

If you have a radio station called, KRKZ, you figure it’s a rock station. KOLD, is probably going to play oldies. WSAD is probably a country and western station. WKKK will probably be banned by the FCC. Following are a couple of examples from my time in Oklahoma.

A big-time station in Oklahoma City was/is KOMA. Based on those call letters you have to wonder…
