My wife and I were new to TimeLeft dinner, a social app that connects its users for group dinners with people who are previously unknown to each other.. The folks who belong are all like minded strangers who enjoy fine dining. An algorithm that considers things like jobs, lifestyle, personality, age and food preferences selects who will meet with whom and in what restaurant.
Each participant is responsible for paying for his or her own meal.
We’ve been to a few on Wednesday nights, the only evening they’re offered in Philadelphia.
The restaurants are usually very good and the strangers whose algorithms match ours are generally congenial.
The fly
One Wednesday my wife and I were with a group of TimeLeft members in a high end French restaurant. The group assembled that night was an attractive bunch. We feasted on the normal French fare: onion soup, escargot, steak tartare, duck confit, boucherie burger, moules frites….
Somewhere between the main course, copious litres of fine French wine and dessert there appeared to be a common house fly buzzing around the table.
I alerted the waiter who gave a half-assed attempt to shoo it away. Nothing permanent like squishing it. The fly simply relocated to another…
