As another year begins, and those lucky enough to have had some time off work between Christmas and the New Year used the extra bit of mental bandwidth to reflect upon the preceding 12 months— and to anticipate the 12 to come — it’s quite normal to ask oneself how happy we are in our present job, and what the alternatives might be.

If you’re working in a large company or corporation, this will not be the first time this year you’ve asked yourself that question. It’s just that the question is starting to get existential.

We’re all too familiar with the everyday signs of a job no longer meeting our need for motivation and meaning beyond a paycheck:

The traditional Sunday Evening Blues, when the tail end of what should be a day of rest becomes tinged with the dread of returning to the office in — gulp! — just a few hours.

The closely related Monday Morning Blues, or “a case of the Mondays” as famously mentioned by the protagonist’s work colleague in Mike Judge’s corporate-life-as-hell 1999 cult masterpiece Office Space.
