Whenever there are school shootings, people will always take to the TV and debate whether or not it’s a gun issue or a mental health issue. There will be a guy on the news who swears school shootings happen because of poor gun regulations, and another guy will swear that school shootings happen because of poor mental health care regulations. And they’ll go back and forth. Is it a gun problem, or is it a mental health problem?

And I know that it is neither. The reason school shootings happen is not because of poor gun regulation, or poor access to good mental health care. That’s crazy.

The reason school shootings happen, is because of school. It’s right there in the title. School sucks for some individuals. It’s a truly terrible time for some people. We all know this. People even create books and movies like “Carrie” about such things.

There is a 52-page profile of school shooters written by the FBI. That profile should be one sentence: “School shooters hate school.”

Do you know someone who hates school or did hate school? You should help them out because if you don’t, they might one day become a school shooter.

Honestly, how hard is it to make sure everyone has a good time at school? Teachers know who gets picked on. Why is it so hard for teachers to actively address that day-to-day? Why is it easier to pretend that school shooters are gun enthusiasts than it is to admit that they are people who were mistreated at school? ’Cause school shooters are never like, “Yeah, I just wanted to shoot up anywhere. I was actually on my way to shoot up a Planet Fitness when I saw this school on the way.” No, school shooters pick schools. So this should be an easy problem to fix.

So, what’s weird, is that it seems, that for society to function, we subconsciously need one-off people to be mistreated at schools. We seem to need this, more than we need school shootings to end.
