A white person asked me online today, “Why do you still vote for Democrats?” That anonymous person likely wouldn’t have asked the same question in person. They get brave on the Internet. But it is a valid question, one I have asked myself from time to time to time and written about a little more than two years ago.

Before anyone tries to school me about the history of the Democratic Party, their ties to the Ku Klux Klan, and how they led the fight for voter suppression, you might tell me how Republicans are the Party of Lincoln and freed the enslaved. I know exactly who the Democratic Party is and where they came from. More importantly, I know who Republicans are today, which guides my choice.

I reread what I wrote and found it has more than stood the test of time. Then my reply included the confirmation hearings of now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Now the confirmation hearings of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson are fresh in my mind. I wrote about voter suppression that has only worsened. Mass incarceration might be your only…
