Your last tube of toothpaste is sitting in your bathroom right now. Because after you make this easy tooth powder recipe, you’ll never go back.

Tooth powder is a blend of clays, baking soda and essential oils that helps do everything toothpaste does in addition to remineralizing and strengthening your teeth. (Yes, you read that right! More on that in a bit.) You use it the same way as toothpaste: wet your toothbrush, add a little tooth powder, and brush for 2–3 minutes in the morning and at night.

If you have sensitive spots, cavity-prone teeth, bad breath, or poor dental health overall, you’ll want to try this tooth powder. Teeth are living, porous parts of your body. And unfortunately, they break down over time.

Your teeth can lose minerals because of acidic foods, food preservatives, commercial toothpaste, medications, chemicals and more. Mineral loss creates weaker enamel and increases pain and the risk of tooth decay and infection.

Unfortunately, teeth can’t remineralize on their own. Even worse, you can’t get these minerals from the foods you eat. Our diet — and the soil some of our foods come from — is so depleted of nutrients that they’re just not there.

Taking a daily supplement might work… expect ingesting the minerals also won’t do the trick. The minerals need to come into contact with your teeth. Since we can’t chew on nutrient-rich foods, we could brush with them.

Regular toothpaste won’t do the trick. They contain fluoride (which is a whole other discussion), glycerin, preservatives, chemicals and other ingredients that simply clean. Toothpowder can clean, whiten and remineralize. Talk about a triple threat!

Do you use a certain toothpaste to help reduce sensitivity? You probably think it works, and it might — to an extent. However, the paste only masks the sensitive area; it doesn’t heal it. That’s where remineralization comes in handy.

Tooth Powder Recipe

  • 3 Tablespoons of Bentonite clay
  • 1 Tablespoon of Baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of pure sea salt
  • 15 drops of peppermint essential oil (food grade)
  1. Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and mix with a spoon. Only use glass, wooden or plastic utensils and containers. Metal will negatively affect the properties of bentonite clay.
  2. Add essential oil and mix.
  3. Store in an air-tight container. (Remember — no metal!)

Try this recipe for yourself and let me know what you think! Or, take the easy way out and brush with Dirty Mouth Toothpowder.

So tooth powder isn’t paste?

No, tooth powder is not a paste. Once you make this easy tooth powder recipe, the hard part might be getting used to brushing with it.

The powder won’t foam up or be overly sweet. But you use it the same way as toothpaste: wet your brush, shake off excess water, apply enough tooth powder to cover two-thirds of your bristles, brush for 2–3 minutes, spit and rinse.

The tooth powder is made with a handful of ingredients that promote good oral health:

Bentonite clay — Nontoxic. Rich in vital minerals, such as calcium and potassium, that are very beneficial for our teeth and gums. It is a very mild, abrasive clay that gently scrubs and beautifully polishes the teeth while detoxifying the gums. It works as an astringent by helping to remove tartar and clean the gums.

Baking soda — Alkaline with a pH of 8.1. Will neutralize the acids in the mouth and promote tooth remineralization, making them cavity-resistant. Baking soda acts as a very mild abrasive for cleansing and polishing the teeth, kills germs, removes odors and can help freshen the breath.

Sea salt — Contains nourishing minerals. Can help heal irritated gums.

Peppermint essential oil — Has antiseptic qualities. Great minty flavor! Freshens the mouth.

My Oral Health Regimen

In addition to a healthy diet and drinking a lot of water, I have a daily routine to keep my teeth healthy and white.

In the morning, I use a bamboo-handled toothbrush with charcoal-infused bristles and Dirty Mouth Toothpowder to brush my teeth. The Black Peppermint flavor is my favorite. It has activated charcoal added to it for extra whitening power.

I also put a few drops of Boost Gum Serum in a glass of water and swish that around in my mouth as a mouthwash.

In the evening, I do the same thing but add the step of using a tongue scraper. I simply pull a copper tongue scraper down my tongue a few times, rinsing it off in between each swipe. If I wake up and my tongue is coated with a film again, I’ll also use a tongue scraper in the morning.

To get my teeth even whiter and brighter, every few days I use an LED whitener. Primal Life Organics has an LED teeth whitener with Boost Whitening Paste that’s all-natural. Yes, you read that right: no chemicals, bleaches or toxins.

The whitening paste is made from extra virgin olive oil (gentle on gum tissue), 15 essential oils, three different clays, and charcoal. Not only can it whiten, but it can also detoxify.

The LED tray plugs right into my phone, so I can power up and go about my day. It’s easily portable! Once I’m done in 10–15 minutes, I rinse off the tray, rinse out my mouth, and smile.
