Consider the meticulous planning that goes into organizing any significant event — a plan, a point of action distilled into a checklist. Yet, amid the hustle and bustle of life’s myriad undertakings, do we afford the same attention to detail to the most significant event of all — our inevitable encounter with our maker?

Consider the pervasive advice of lifestyle gurus, TED talks, mentors, and trainers: the importance of documenting our long and short-term goals. Isn’t this, in essence, a form of checklist — a tangible roadmap for our aspirations?

From the mundane task of grocery shopping to the complexities of NASA’s missions, the checklist reigns supreme as a simple yet ingenious tool for success. So, why do we hesitate to apply this same methodology to our spiritual journey?

In an era where data analysis thrives, why do we not scrutinize our spiritual performance against our intended growth with the same rigor? Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge the need for a spiritual checklist — a set of parameters against which we can measure our progress in the eyes of our Creator.

Consider the following parameters, a humble attempt to compile a checklist for the ultimate judgment:

1. Kindness & Compassion: Are we consistently demonstrating kindness and compassion to others and do we show empathy towards those in need?

(90:17) And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind.

(52:26) They will say, “We used to be kind and humble among our people.

(2:263) Kind words and compassion are better than a charity that is followed by insult. GOD is Rich, Clement

2. Honesty & Trustworthiness: Can we be relied upon to uphold our word and commitments? Are we truthful in our dealings, both with ourselves and others?

(23:8) When it comes to deposits entrusted to them, as well as any agreements they make, they are trustworthy.

(70:32) And the believers keep their word; they are trustworthy.

(2:177) … and they keep their word whenever they make a promise.

3. Mercy: Are we forgiving and merciful, reflecting the divine mercy in our interactions?

(42:37) They avoid gross sins and vice, and when angered they forgive.

(42:43) Resorting to patience and forgiveness reflects a true strength of character.

4. God-consciousness: Do we maintain awareness of the divine presence in our daily lives?

(3:191) They remember GOD while standing, sitting, and on their sides, and they reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create all this in vain. Be You glorified. Save us from the retribution of Hell.

(4:103) …you shall remember GOD while standing, sitting, or lying down.

(7:205) You shall remember your Lord within yourself, publicly, privately, and quietly, day and night; do not be unaware.*

  • 7:205 Your god is whoever or whatever occupies your mind most of the day. This explains the fact that most of those who believe in God are destined for Hell (See 12:106, 23:84–90, and Appendix 27).

(33:41) O you who believe, you shall remember GOD frequently.

5. Faith and Confidence: Do we place complete trust and confidence in our Creator, even in times of uncertainty?

(3:160) If GOD supports you, none can defeat you. And if He abandons you, who else can support you? In GOD the believers shall trust.

(3:159) …and trust in GOD. GOD loves those who trust in Him.

(8:2) The true believers are those whose hearts tremble when GOD is mentioned, and when His revelations are recited to them, their faith is strengthened, and they trust in their Lord.

(65:3) And will provide for him whence he never expected. Anyone who trusts in GOD, He suffices him. GOD’s commands are done. GOD has decreed for everything its fate.

6. Spiritual Focus: Do we live our lives with the hereafter in mind, striving for spiritual growth amidst worldly pursuits?

(39:9) Is it not better to be one of those who meditate in the night, prostrating and staying up, being aware of the Hereafter, and seeking the mercy of their Lord? Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” Only those who possess intelligence will take heed.

7. Diligence: Are we consistently striving to improve ourselves and fulfill our purpose?

[5:35] O you who believe, you shall reverence GOD and seek the ways and means to Him, and strive in His cause, that you may succeed.

(3:142) Do you expect to enter Paradise without GOD distinguishing those among you who strive, and without distinguishing those who are steadfast?

(29:6) Those who strive, strive for their own good. GOD is in no need for anyone.

This checklist is by no means exhaustive, but it serves as a starting point for introspection and self-assessment. As we navigate life’s journey, let us not overlook the importance of preparing for our ultimate destination. Let us embrace the power of the checklist to guide us towards a life of purpose, fulfillment, and spiritual growth.

(2:210) Are they waiting until GOD Himself comes to them in dense clouds, together with the angels? When this happens, the whole matter will be terminated, and to GOD everything will be returned.*

  • 2:210 This world is a test; it is our last chance to restore ourselves back into God’s kingdom by denouncing idol worship (see the INTRODUCTION). If God and His angels show up, everyone will believe, and the test will no longer be valid.
