Passion vs. Purpose

There is a lot of talk these days about “finding your passion”. Common lore holds that when you are following your passion, blissful happiness ensues.

Funny thing is — following your passion might just be terrible advice. Scott Adams, creator of the uber-successful Dilbert comics wrote about this; looking at passion (and goals) and compare them with systems. I tend to agree.

But here’s the rub: Where passion falls short, purpose kicks in.

Purpose is the the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. It’s the deeply meaningful sister to passion. The one which stays with you for a long, long time and feeds your soul.

Finding your purpose and aligning your work (and life) with it, might just be the most powerful and longest lasting thing you can do.
