A simple roadside coffee stall brought back childhood memories. Watching a woman brew coffee the old way reminded me of my grandmother’s morning ritual.

It was early morning when my husband and I made a quick stop before crossing the Sadao border from Thailand into Malaysia. We had driven from Koh Samui and needed a good, strong coffee. At the roadside, we saw a small food stall selling noodles and coffee, so we decided to stop.

As we waited, I noticed a woman making coffee in the old-style way — pouring the dark liquid through a cloth strainer. Watching her brought back childhood memories of my Lola (grandmother), who used to make coffee the same way when I was young.

I remember waking up to the smell of her coffee in the morning, hearing the soft clinking of cups, and feeling the warmth of those quiet moments. The cloth filter she used, just like the one the woman was using now, was a common sight in our kitchen.
