Celebrating Black women during Black History Month

The Herstory Project is launching during Black History Month with a focus on dynamic Black women in the San Antonio community.

Traditionally Black History Month centers on the Black struggle and strife. The narrative is often dominated by stories of what Black people in America have overcome and the mountains that still lie ahead.

I believe there should be proper reverence for the Black giants whose shoulders we now stand on. There is always a time and place to commemorate the trials and tribulations Black people have experienced in North America. I also believe there should be a spotlight on the everlasting joy and resilience of Black people.

While we are still fighting for various nuances of social and legal change, it’s not everyday boots on the ground and fists in the air. The Herstory Project seeks to serve as a visual and aural reminder that Black people, especially, Black women are not living in a state of constant anger.

On the contrary, Black women laugh, sing, dance, joke, shout, and express joy in so many ways. Joy plays a prominent role in the Black experience.

This project marries my two passions, photography and radio. These portraits can talk. Next to each woman’s portrait is a recording of them sharing what brings them joy. Press play and let’s celebrate the women making herstory every single day.

This project is currently on display at the Impact Guild located at 708 W Summit, San Antonio, Texas. Please share the project on social media and use #TheHerstoryProject #BlackHerstoryProject
