The third chapter of the Herstory Project re-emerges with new energy and support.

After a year-long hiatus, The Herstory Project is making a grand re-entrance. Following the successful production and exhibition of chapters one and two of The Herstory Project in 2021, chapter three is launching in March 2023. In every aspect chapter three is getting important upgrades.

Here’s how.

Being a recipient of the 2023 Individual Artist Grant, facilitated by the City of San Antonio’s Department of Art and Culture, catalyzed a new level of possibilities. Thanks to the grant the in-studio production process was streamlined, and the portraits are printed larger on a fine art paper and mounted for gallery display. The grant funds also support the documentation of the creation of the Herstory Project through photos and video.

Through strategic community partnerships, The Herstory Project will use sponsorship funds and in-kind goods and services to deliver two engaging community events. The opening reception for the multimedia installation and the signature community storytelling event will both be getting important upgrades to facilitate more memorable experiences for our community.

The venues where the community can engage with chapter three are significant. Motherling Gallery is a woman-run and owned space that champions women and under-represented artists. The Little Carver, a performing arts space on San Antonio’s historic east side, will be the venue for the community storytelling event. Both of these spaces are in alignment with the Herstory Project’s mission to meet and activate the community in zip codes where these conversations need to happen most.

For the first time, The Herstory Project will be making its debut with two area schools. Activating conversations with youth is a critical branch of The Herstory Project’s mission.

Nothing good happens alone. Chapter three is rising to an exciting new level thanks to the undying support and hard work of The Herstory Project’s staunch advocates.

A hearty thank you to the City of San Antonio Department of Art and Culture for honoring The Herstory Project with its first-ever artist grant. Thank you to the sponsors: The H.E.Butt Foundation, Essence Prep, Digital Pro Lab, StumbleWell, Japhet Media, and Female Executives of Texas.

Thank you to Crisa Valadez for welcoming the project into Motherling. Thank you to Ernie Ramirez, John Nieto and Cassandra Parker-Nowicki with the Carver for accommodating the Herstory Event in so many ways.

Thank you to the community partners: Purple Couch Therapy, Beauty Haus SA, Pure Aloha Beauty, and Urban Goods. Thank you to the vendors: Bvidas Bartending, Eternal Essence Events, DJ Von Que Fancy.

Thank you to Courtney Warden and Paola Longoria of CoPa for telling the story of the months-long making of The Herstory Project; San Antonio Poet Laurette Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson for writing an original poem about this chapter of The Herstory Project; and TJ with Ferrovisuals for filming her performance of the poem. Thank you Kaylee Greenlee Beal and Rhonda Parramore for their in-studio production assistance.

Special thanks to a few other very key players including Mary Margaret Johnson, Nancy Canseco, Chris Hernandez, Rocky Hernandez, Mark Menjivar, Elizabeth Coffee, Spencer Heath, Alex, Brittney Davila, and Victor Hernandez.

With fervor and undying generosity, this tribe breathes life into The Herstory Project. Thank you.
