A Hillsong Sydney Conference illustrating the assembled power of a megachurch.

Hillsong Church is a Pentecostal Christian megachurch helming from Sydney, Australia that abides by an evangelical practice. Founded in 1983 by Brian and Bobbie Houston, the “youth ministry” now has churches in 23 centres around the world with an average weekly attendance of 130,000 (a megachurch is cemented after hitting 2,000+ weekly attendants). Up until 2019 it was a fellow of Australian Christian Churches, and by extension, Assemblies of God, but recently announced their plans to sever ties and form their own denomination. Their mission is to spread the Cause of Christ to the global community through worship and music with a media-based focus. One of their offshoot bands Hillsong UNITED has over 3.6 million monthly listeners on Spotify with an aim to to write songs that awaken individuals to their redeemable potential through the story of God. UNITED has a highly-successful tour circuit, and both the band and church are backed by a number of high-profile celebrities including Justin and Hailey Bieber, Selena Gomez, and the Kardashian/Jenner clan (a likely influence prior to the formation of Kanye West’s Sunday Service). Other musical entities attached to it include Hillsong Young & Free and Hillsong Worship. The church is known for its trendy, hipster haven and cult-like services, appealing to an impressionable, media-obsessed millennial crowd that are attracted to the charisma, glamour and community at the heart of their mission.
