Legendary City Founders
Many ancient cities have fascinating origin myths
Many ancient cities and cultures have foundation myths. These stories tell of the people who created them while adding some unlikely details. While we know that Alexander the Great founded cities like Alexandria in Egypt, other places have more questionable roots.
Is it possible some of these people existed? Yes, but in many cases, we can put their tales in the mythology category. In some cases, these cities are said to be founded by some hero or god. In others, it could be some ancient figure lost to the annals of history except for the legends surrounding them.
Nimrod
In the Hebrew Bible, Nimrod is the son of Cush and great-grandson of Noah. He is characterized as a great hunter who became king of Shinar in Lower Mesopotamia. Nimrod is also described as having a rebellious spirit and may have commissioned the famous Tower of Babel.
There are no non-biblical historical records of Nimrod. However, historians think he could be associated with Naraim-Sin of Akkad, the grandson of Sargon the Great.
