SMS yourself an SOS

The world feels pretty chaotic and uncertain right now — no one really knows what will happen in the coming months. Some might be more optimistic, and take advantage of the extra time they now have at home, while others might feel overwhelmed and powerless. I wanted to focus on encouraging people to go easy on themselves, especially in particularly weird times like the present.

My poster sells the value of self-care through a fun and simple message: “SMS yourself an SOS.” We are all so accustomed to checking in on those close to us: our loved ones, friends, peers, colleagues, etc. However, we aren’t reminded often enough to check in on ourselves. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself is just be kind; allow yourself to have bad days, to be unproductive, or even just take a few minutes for yourself.

I wanted to keep my poster simple yet fun; I brainstormed ways to convey the message to check in on yourself and immediately gravitated towards the idea of sending a text. I thought about how I have been communicating recently, and it has primarily been through my phone given shelter in place orders. I loved the idea of a flip phone — it meant the message I included would need to be short and also felt more fun than your average iPhone. The phone is a bright and playful pink to stick out against the more calming blue background. And lastly, my favorite part, the slogan: “SMS yourself an SOS.” A quick and catchy phrase that reminds us all to take a minute and send ourselves a very important message: “take wut U need & b kind 2 urself.”
