Sou Fujimoto and Christian de Portzamparc: A pop-up book

This pop-up book was written by Chidinma Agbo, Morgan Zagerman, and Jabreea Johnson. We were inspired by the bold creations of Christian De Portzamparc and Sou Fujimoto. We chose these architects in particular because they are uniquely complementary to one another. Christian is a French architect known for bold designs while Sou is a Japanese architect that gravitates toward seemingly light structures. Despite the main difference in their design expression, both share similar values such as the incorporation of the natural environment, or understanding the cultural background of their surroundings. To convey their similarities and differences, we modeled our book based off of the Ancient Chinese concept of yin and yang, which states that seemingly opposite forces may actually be interconnected or complementary.

We decided to create a digital pop-up book with Figma because we believed that Figma was convenient and provided us enough flexibility to include various interactions for the reader. If you’d like to learn more about the architects, check out these links: The Architect Making Conceptual Art Out of Buildings (Sou Fujimoto), Spotlight: Christian de Portzamparc (Christian De Portzamparc)
