Welcome to Industrial Design

In the “A Brief History of Industrial and Interaction Design” chapter, the target audience seems to be anyone interested in the history of design or becoming a designer/ innovator themselves. The piece appears to assume that their audience has minimal knowledge of the evolution of design throughout history and the accomplishments of design in several fields. The tone of this article seems very rigid and textbook like. The whole chapter seems very formulaic in the way it presents each subsection and the relevant facts.

Even though the “Black People Invented Everything” chapter shares related information and has a similar target audience as the other chapter, the tone and manner of conveying its message are very different. In this chapter, the target audience appears to be anyone who wants to design and innovate and also, anyone who has not been taught about the design accomplishments of Black people throughout American history and global history. The author assumes that the lack of knowledge about the design accomplishments of Black people throughout history is caused by the discriminatory lense throughout which history is taught in the American school system. The tone used in this chapter is playful and empowering, which conveys the author’s desire to inspire others and teach about these histories that have been overshadowed for too long.
