Twitter — The Portal to the Metaverse
Why Facebook and their billions won’t beat Twitter’s Metaverse
As it’s always hard to predict how the virtual worlds will come to pass, I write this article against my better judgement. I surrender to my dreaming mind, fascinated by the captivating possibility of “the metaverse.” Stories like Ready Player One seem thrilling and full of intrigue these days. The problem right now is that it only exists in fragmented Minecraft servers, developing web3 startups, and perhaps a few traditional video games. While Facebook and other behemoths seem to have big plans to dive headfirst into the virtual new world, Twitter may succeed in becoming the Portal to the Metaverse, without even trying. Here’s why!
The Relationship of Web3 and the Metaverse
The first reason Twitter will succeed at helping people access the metaverse is its emphasis on real-time, open communication. Twitter makes this a strong emphasis. The platform’s open communication approach encourages the exchange of ideas and information, already making it the public hub for Web3. Also, as Twitter begins to mimic WhatsApp’s encrypted messages, it’s possible many individuals concerned for privacy may begin to flock to the platform.
“Web3 and the metaverse are inseparably linked to each other. The metaverse will continue to exist….even though Web3 is still frequently referred to as decentralized; however, the metaverse will remain centralized in terms of social media controlling platforms.” — Andy Patrizio, TechTarget
In a way I think we all know that, to some degree, centralized entities may still control the infrastructure to many things we use, even the metaverses we build. But perhaps it has more to do with the landscape of that structure that we’re concerned about. Rules built into code seems supreme in a fair system. Blockchain is more democratic and transparent.
Twitter has a wider adoption and recognition as a platform for news and information. “Overall, 23% of Americans use Twitter, and roughly seven-in-ten U.S. Twitter users (69%) say they get news on the site”, according to a new Pew Research Center.
Twitter is widely recognized as a platform for breaking news and information, with a user base that is more highly engaged and informed than other platforms. Because fast information is key to a decentralized and growing economy, this fact makes it a better choice to become a metaverse hub compared to other platforms.
Bring The Old World Along
APIs and Smart Contracts go hand-in-hand. Perhaps these two basic concepts are even where traditional web and web3 meet, and its common knowledge that Twitter has a technologically advanced and open API, allowing for greater integration and customization of the platform. This focus makes Twitter a more attractive option for Web3 developers and users. Building walls during a time of decentralization only drives digital pioneers away. The crypto community must do a better job at helping each other succeed. A house divided cannot stand. And with that same mentality, should we not be more willing to work with centralized systems that don’t appear to be slowing down?
Twitter has a long history of supporting free speech and open communication, making it a natural choice for a metaverse hub in the web3 landscape. Even through some interesting political times in Twitter’s history, it’s fair to say that the platform has generally been used as a place for open dialogue. Elon Musk’s buyout was significant however as we saw many areas of past corruption revealed and dealt with. Whether you agree with the man or not in many of his endeavors, his defense of free speech has been positive.
Twitter has a robust level of user engagement and interaction compared to Facebook. The growing trend of DeFi and NFTs in the metaverse space is supported by Twitter itself, making it suitable to build on. As Elon Musk teases the idea of supporting Dogecoin in the future, Twitter could be the first large social media platform that truly adopts cryptocurrency in a meaningful way.
Some may look at Facebook’s Meta and point out that its position in their Metaverse is supreme. Some may give a very compelling argument that Apple will be the overall winner. After all, Twitter has a smaller user base compared to these tech giants. The answer to this is clear, however. There’s one primary space Web3 companies are interacting with other Web3 companies, and that’s Twitter.
How Can Star Atlas Shape Web3?
As a unique and immersive virtual experience that combines the elements of gaming, space exploration, and cryptocurrency its community has grown to a massive size. I’ve found that one of the best ways to learn about something is by going to the source. While many scams exist, plenty of lies about Web3 gaming and this particular project also exist. The game is still in developmental phase and perhaps they will make mistakes, but the underlying actions of Star Atlas points to giving “Power to the People”.
This is a project that does seem to be happening. While the process may seem slow, Star Atlas once matured, will destroy other titles in the decentralized space (even large names like Illuvium). Some of these communities who’ve found short-term successes may find troubling times as a lack of vision leads them to lose traction, echoing the dot-com bubble. Without clear objectives and guidance, as outlined in the Star Atlas white paper, economic paper, leadership, team, and the development of a strong community, it will be hard for anyone to compete this early on in Web3.
