Does Hitting 40 Change Our Perception in More Ways Than We Realize?
The true message our eyes are trying to tell us.
There are a few things that happen around the time you turn forty, at least that’s what I was told, but as the big day approached I felt confident. I looked younger, felt younger, and was happily certain that none of those things applied to me.
It appears I was wrong.
Parties were had, gifts were opened, and the birthday was marked with celebration. I felt as though I had reached a target and things could now continue as normal.
A month or so later, I remember talking with a group of friends, all of whom were slightly older than I. They smiled at me knowingly when I mumbled something about needing a new eye test, and when I questioned them, each one shared a story of coming to terms with the vanity that either had or was still, stopping them from surrendering to that mark of old age, the dreaded bifocal lenses.
They told me of finding excuses to stop driving at night, of reading less or the many times they’d had to smooth ruffled feathers when they had ‘ignored’ people they just hadn’t seen when out for a walk.
It seems we all had one post-forty experience in common… even if we weren’t feeling older, our eyes certainly were.
