Last night

The Honest Perspective

Last night I slept with my husband
(as in, shared a bed)
For the first time
(well, in seven years)

Every family figures
What’s best for them
But for me and him
Our hearts couldn’t explain
To small hearts who love us
That we would be next to them
Between:
The hours of 7am and 7pm
But no more.

Mummy and Daddy having company
At night,
Whilst the kids slept alone
Til the light,
Was not for us.

So we split up,
Temporarily,
Between 7pm and 7am
Boys vs girls
Dorms filled with cuddles and smiles,
Knowing their noises,
Soothing their dreams,
With just the placement of hands.

Until last night —
Both now grown large, independent
Enough
To recognise our weight in their beds
Brings more disturbance than rest.
So we big ones returned to
Laying next to each other
Rolling equally to the middle
Of the first night together
(for seven years).
