Welcome to one of my favourite weeks of the year… my birthday week!
On Wednesday I turn 46 and as I tip into the realisation that I am now closer to 50 than 40 and therefore most definitely ‘middle aged’, I find myself reflecting not just on the year gone by, as I usually would, but on the nature of ageing in the modern world.
Birthdays mark time. A candle for each year, a quiet tally of the life lived so far. We celebrate, we reflect, we joke about getting older — as if ageing is something to fear, something we can laugh off, something we should manage carefully. And while I think this is in large part a response to our often unspoken fear of death, it feels as though age and ageing means something very different now than it did when I was a teen.
